ROXIE – Diabetic Alert Dog
Having always been a lover of dogs, I love seeing a dog doing a job. I think I love it so much because I am always amazed at how well some dogs do their job. The right dog really can make a difference in peoples lives.
Last summer, a brand new working pup entered into my world. The pup, Roxie, is an American Wirehaired Pointing Griffon. Primarily used as a hunting dog and companion, the pup belonged to good friends of mine (and one of my breeders), Scott and Mindy Harn.
Their soon to be four-year-old daughter Dyllan was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. I soon learned, this diagnosis involves checking blood levels regularly throughout the day, then giving a shot of insulin to adjust the levels.
This sounds fairly simple until you realize little Dyllan needs to get at least 8 needle sticks daily to check blood levels followed by another 8 shots… that is 16 sticks a day every day. If you have kids, you know what a tall order this is, both for the person being stuck and the mom who has to stick.
I couldn’t help but think of my own son at that age who needed stitches in his chin. I had to pin his arms back and hold him down while the Dr. gave him a few shots of Novocain. The entire time my son was wildly flailing, screaming at the top of his lungs, “Don’t cut me, please don’t cut me!!” That episode required a six pack of beer to calm dad down afterwards. If I had to do that sixteen times a day forever, I’d be searching for a new liver.
